Natural Stone Interior Panels

The commercial interior designer, or architect, that is faced with covering interior walls in stone has an interesting challenge ahead. Today, we want to focus on how this might be best accomplished, in a renovation or retrofit situation, using our Natural Stone Interior Panels.

One potential solution is fairly ancient, literally. The time honored method of stone, in tile format, being installed in a mortar bed over a somewhat reinforced substrate is as old as architecture. Naturally, not all clients can deal with what a mortar based installation entails in terms of  “fuss and muss” while the process is underway. Also, the need to address a substrate that can accept about 20lbs per square foot of mortar and stone is not the simplest task. Lastly, this is not a quick process and, as we all know, renovations are often very time sensitive.

Fast forward now to 2019, then take a look above at a natural stone panel system being readied for installation in a Federal Courthouse in Orlando. You can see there the installation of an aluminum rail system into the substrate. What you don’t see in this imagery is the back side of the stone panels that also have an aluminum rail that slides into the elements in the substrate. Below please now see the installers finalizing the seating of the panels.

It is also pretty easy to notice the lack of mortar and the ease of site clean-up that implies. Our Natural Stone Interior Panels weigh approximately 4lbs per square foot. Therefore, it is also significant to understand how easy this makes for handling during installation. A further benefit of lightweight systems is the simplification of substrate preparation.
